5 things worth knowing when visiting the museum
1.The museum is dark
Textiles are extremely fragile. Their two main enemies are dust and light. When exhibiting textile pieces, it is essential:
- to protect them from dust
- to illuminate them with a maximum brightness of 50 luxAs a result, the museum is somewhat dimly lit.
2. The museum seems small
This impression is to do with the building’s organisation. The Museum premises occupy five old Brussels houses. The five small buildings that make up the museum today stand on cramped plots that are remnants of the medieval city. What’s more, the street climbs: the ground floor of No. 10 is not at the same level as that of No. 8.
3.The historical collections are partly kept in storage
Brussels Fashion and Lace Museum has some 20,000 pieces of lace, clothing and accessories dating from the 16th century to the present day. For conservation reasons, the museum cannot have all its collections on permanent display. Some historical items can be admired:
- Depending on the theme, through the Triplex exhibitions which last 7 to 9 months
- In the Lace Room. Every other year the team carries out a complete rotation of the objects on display.
4.The museum may be partly open
At the end of an exhibition, from January until March or April, the Triplex space closes so we can dismantle the finished exhibition, carry out work and set up the next exhibition. The Studio and the Lace Room remain accessible free of charge.
However, the museum may be completely closed for 2 to 3 weeks. To find out the exact dates, check the practical details
5. 5.How to discover the museum
A tour guide is available for every space:
- Either on paper. To make reading easier in the dimly lit rooms, our guards provide reading lamps.
- Or via a QR code. The screen’s brightness creates a more comfortable reading experience.
