From New Look to Expo 58

Exhibition 21.03.08 > 29.12.09

It’s spring 1958. The first post-war global exhibition opens to the public in Brussels. It fulfils the hopes of technological progress.

During this period of euphoria, the female silhouette evolves radically. Paris dictates the trends. Fashion is changing, as if to make us forget the famine of the war years. Fabrics, models and colours are becoming more and more luxurious.

An exhibition as part of the fiftieth anniversary of Expo 58

As part of the fiftieth anniversary of Expo 58, the Brussels Fashion & Lace Museum offered its visitors a chance to rediscover fashion trends from 1947 to the 1960s.

The exhibits, the creations of famous designers and outfits from Belgian fashion houses are part of the collections amassed by the Museum since 1977. Evening dresses, wedding dresses, cocktail outfits, suits, coats and accessories illustrate this sumptuous period in the history of women’s fashion, characterised by an elegance that has been rarely matched.
