The journey mapped out by this exhibition

From the late 18th century to the present day, there have been several moments in the history of Western fashion when purity, practicality, and naturalness were an obvious response to periods of excess.
Mathilde Semal, curator

The exhibition consists of six thematic chapters that reflect the different ways in which simplicity was expressed. By bringing together and contrasting pieces from different periods, it highlights the continuities, comebacks, and contradictions of the aesthetic across the centuries:

The liberation of the female body from dress-related constraints is a recurring theme in the history of fashion. The exhibition opens with a gown known as a Chemise à la Reine. This radically simple piece from the 1780s enters into a dialogue with a design by Martin Margiela. From more than two centuries later.

The second chapter looks at the enduring influence of neo-classical aesthetics. Exemplified by the Empire dress. Mariano Fortuny, Madeleine Vionnet, Madame Grès, and Issey Miyake, among others, revisited the classical ideal in response to the modernity of their time.

Whether with the fantastical approach taken in the 18th century or the libertarian spirit of the 1970s, the return to nature transcends different periods. For example, it inspired Dries van Noten and Jacquemus. They incorporate flowery fields, forests, and gardens into the design of their fashion shows. Today, the #cottagecore or #gorpcore movement, which reappeared after the 2020 health crisis, is perpetuating this interest in nature.

Simplicity of clothing was also embodied in forms designed for practicality, mobility, and everyday wear. So tailcoats, frock coats, and English-style dresses found their way into wardrobes. The practicality of these garments looks ahead to sportswear.

Simple and understated, men’s clothing influenced what women were wearing. Tailored suits reveal how borrowing from menswear became a tool for emancipation. Later, it became a vital element in work-related aspirations, culminating in the power dressing of the 1980s and 1990s.

The exhibition’s final chapter offers an interpretation of the 1990s as a moment when different strands were pulled together. A new generation of designers gave simplicity the status of an aesthetic manifesto: Ann Demeulemeester in Belgium and Calvin Klein in the United States. Today, uncluttered designs like those of Nicolas di Felice for Courrèges continue the minimalist spirit with a contemporary vision.

“40+ years of STIJL ” is the story of a boutique, a neighbourhood, a burgeoning creative scene and an art movement with an international influence. It’s the story of artistic expressions of global importance that have taken place right on your doorstep.”

This is a success story narrated by Aya Noël. She is a fashion journalist, an experienced curator and Sonja’s daughter. Aya takes us through her family’s heritage, which proved to be quite a challenge – how do you weave a coherent story from family anecdotes and personal archives?

Understanding STIJL’s history means understanding the vision of these designers and the needs and demands of the customers who wear the clothes from their collections.

An unexpected exhibition

Like the boutique itself, the exhibition 40+ years of STIJL highlights the work of designers. The exhibition is not arranged in chronological order. It is structured around STIJL’s values. What exactly are these values? The designers, collaborators and customers that Aya Noël me to build the exhibition are the best People to explain. They each describe these values in their own way: originality, authenticity, soul,…

These values have been translated into the three main themes of the exhibition: pioneers, insiders and timelessness, referring to the characteristics of the designers as much as to STIJL itself.

To structure the tour, the curator has also considered the role of the boutique. This is what allowed the most avant-garde designs to find a place in everyone’s wardrobe. When STIJL first opened, Belgium was a hotbed of new artistic trends. The first avant-garde fashion designers were the Antwerp Six. Sonja discovered the work of Marina Yee. She persuaded the young designer to sell her prototypes to STIJL. Through her she met the other members of the “6”. From that moment onwards, her close relationship with designers, combined with her ruthless, instinctive selection process opened a window into the precise mechanisms of creation and production that make this fashion so unique.

The first exhibition devoted to Jules François Crahay

Jules François Crahay. Back in the spotlight traces the long and fascinating career of this fashion virtuoso. Beyond a biographical aim, the exhibition seeks to define and enhance the renown of this designer’s unique style. As artistic director of the Nina Ricci fashion house between 1959 and 1963 and then at Lanvin from 1964 to 1984, Crahay set the tone for a light, playful, romantic fashion, a touch theatrical but always perfectly in control.

While his couture was not one to break boundaries or use statement-women, it was marked by independence and sometimes dictated fashion, shaping it through its passion for folklore and exoticism. And keeping its distance from both purism and futurism. He excelled, in particular, in the manipulation of fabrics, colours and motifs.

The exhibition covers half a century of the history of fashion while tracing the career of this little-known Belgian couturier. The Fashion & Lace Museum unveils its unique collection built up over the years. A selection of haute couture and ready-to-wear samples from this collection is supplemented by outstanding loans from the Palais Galliera – City of Paris Fashion Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Patrimoine Lanvin and other public or private collections. 65 silhouettes, accompanied by sketches, photos, films and archival documents bring to life the person and work of the famous yet forgotten couturier.

Jules François Crahay

A key figure in the fashion sector during his lifetime, Jules François Crahay descended into oblivion after his death. The reasons include his discrete nature as well as the absence of a brand that would have kept his name alive. He left behind no archives after his death decades ago.

Jules François Crahay was born in Liège on 21 May 1917. From an early age, he was immersed in the world of couture. His mother had a workshop that offered “dresses and coats”. That world made a deep impression on him. In 1934, he moved to Paris to take courses in cutting at the Institut Mondial de Coupe. He spent two years there. When he returned to Liège, he worked for his mother’s company.

On 11 May 1940, he was taken prisoner and sent to a camp in Lower Saxony. He designed and made costumes for the camp’s theatrical troupe. He was liberated by the British on 8 May 1945 and returned home to Belgium. Twenty days later, his mother died at the age of 52. After that, he took over his mother’s fashion house and renamed it Jules Crahay.

In 1951, he moved to Paris to take over the Jane Régny fashion label. After presenting just two collections, the company went bankrupt. He then joined Nina Ricci as a designer. In 1959, he designed his first collection that was entirely haute couture. In 1963, he joined the Jeanne Lanvin company, replacing Antonio Castillo as designer. He would ultimately become the best paid couturier in Paris. Two years later, the Jeanne Lanvin fashion house reduced the size of its haute couture collection by half. Crahay also created the brand’s ready-to-wear line.

Over the course of his career, Jules François Crahay was awarded 3 Dès d’or. A record! He received the awards in 1977, 1981 and 1984, the year of his last haute-couture collection at Lanvin. Two years later, he designed the first collection in his ready-to-wear brand: Jules François Crahay. It was produced by the Japanese group Itokin. Two boutiques opened in Tokyo and Osaka.

Jules François Crahay died on 5 January 1988 in Monte-Carlo

her strategy of personifying the garment in department stores in line with mindsets of the 1970s

the development and diversification of her lines

her approach to women and to clients. Diane von Furstenberg meets and listens to women wearing her creations all over the United States. This enables her to develop a true and lasting link. From Amy Winehouse to Michelle Obama, women everywhere love her wrap dress

Finally, the exhibition looks at her philanthropy, allowing visitors to better understand her work and her commitment to women.

The wrap dress

The printed jersey wrap dress is an emblematic garment of undisputed international renown.

Its celebrity has made the wrap dress an archetypal form of fashion, in the same way as age-old garments, kimonos or uniforms. Indeed, they all share a number of characteristics. This dress has lasted for 50 uninterrupted years, all the while taking account of the trends that have marked the various decades.

Conceived by a woman, the wrap dress is part of a worldwide history of fashion designed by women. Unlike their male counterparts, they favour simple, relaxed styles, designed to suit their body language and their daily lives.

The exhibition revisits the Italian origins of the wrap dress and the story behind its structure: the combination of a top and a skirt.
