Man maintains an ambiguous relationships with his back. The flattest area of our body, the back is hidden from view. It makes the body more vulnerable. However, fashion continues to adorn it. To load it. To strip it. Back Side, an exhibition created at the Fashion & Lace Museum in 2018, questioned the perception we have of our own back and the backs of others.
To explore this unique theme of the back in fashion, the Brussels Museum joined forces with the Palais Galliera, the City of Paris Fashion Museum. The exhibition showcased an exceptional array of clothes and accessories from the 18th century to the present day, drawn from the collections of the two Museums and from the archives of major fashion houses.
The Back Side exhibition brought together magnificent pieces from Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Elsa Schiaparelli, Azzedine Alaïa, Yohji Yamamoto, Martin Margiela and Olivier Theyskens.
