In November 2018, visitors to the Brussels Fashion & Lace Museum were able to attend the Back Side conference. This Fashion Lesson No. 18 was held at the Brussels City Hall and was presented by Alexandre Samson, curator of the Back Side: fashion from behind exhibition. Alexandre Samson is a fashion historian and the Head of contemporary creation at the Palais Galliera, the City of Paris Fashion Museum.
What topics were discussed during the “Back side” conference?
In a western society obsessed by the face, the conference questions the connections between body and clothing as well as the perception we have of our backs and that of others, from a social and psychological point of view.
Humans maintain a contradictory relationship with their backs. The back conceals itself from sight and touch. Vulnerable because it is exposed to others, it reminds us of our own limits.
However, fashion continues to adorn it. To load it. Or to strip it.
The back is an asexual area, the flattest part of our body. The messages and motives unfold in complete clarity and yet are never seen.
The Back Side conference was held in Brussels on Thursday 22 November 2018.
