This event has already taken place.

For 200 years, England led the way in men’s fashion. During the conference, the art historian Paula Dumont gave an overview of the evolution of the male silhouette, from the cravat  of the dandy Beau Brummell to the boots of the Beatles.

What topics were discussed during the conference “ALL THINGS ENGLISH. ANGLOMANIA IN MALE FASHION”?

For 200 years, from the middle of the 18th century onwards, Anglomania reigned across Europe.

The English ruled supreme over all codes of male elegance. They set the tone for men’s fashion and seduced French society. During this period, the redingote or frock coat was the first garment displaying clear English symbolism. This word, derived from riding coat was Napoleon’s favourite garment.

Paula Dumont has worked as an image consultant. She is also a stylist for theatre, television and cinema and teaches and organises workshops on the history of the suit and stage costume.

The conference All things English. Anglomania in male fashion was held in Brussels on Thursday 14 January 2016.
