Meeting with Daniel Henry, between textile and heritage
In April 2024, the Wedding Hall of the City Hall was embellished with a new textile work by the artist Daniel Henry! After more than 120 years the original embroidery could no longer be exhibited for conservation reasons. While blending in with the original décor, the contemporary work evokes love as a succession of moments of magnetic attraction.
Daniel Henry shares with us his reflections on the process of creating the Velum Magneticus. The work plays on a series of dualities: embroidery and serigraphy, shade and light, give and take, calm and agitation, etc. And the printing and decorative techniques used are still under-represented in textile works. The artist will bring along some samples, allowing us to be fully immersed in his exceptional creative universe.
Born in 1976 in Tournai, Daniel Henry studied at La Cambre-Mode[s] in Brussels. He was far more interested in the matter than the form. A year before graduating, he obtained his first contract and set up his studio in the attic of his family home. He devoted himself to the textile industry before branching out into research and development. This allowed the artist to favour the long-term over the seasonal. Additionally, luxury houses can call upon his craftsmanship. For about a decade, Daniel Henry spent part of his time on visual research around the theme of the Sacred.
